Why Emails Might Not Be Reaching Your Shoppers

When our platform sends emails to your shoppers (like receipts or shipping updates), some email services might block or mark them as spam.

In nearly all cases, this happens because your website’s "digital address book" (DNS settings) isn’t up-to-date. To ensure email delivery, you need to add a few "permission slips" that tell email services, "Yes, this email is safe and coming from the right place."

As part of the onboarding process, the Run Free Project team will request access to your DNS Host (where these settings are managed) and set everything up for you, ensuring emails reach your shoppers without issues. However, if your DNS settings are changed—whether due to switching web hosts, updating email providers, or any number of reasons—they can sometimes break or disappear.

This article shows you how to check the health of your DNS settings for your Run Free Project eCommerce store and what to do if your score isn’t a perfect 10/10.

How to Test to Ensure Your DNS Settings are Set Properly

To check if your DNS settings are configured correctly, we’ll use two tools: Mail-Tester.com and your Run Free Project eCommerce site. Follow these steps carefully:

1. Visit Mail-Tester.com

  • Open Mail-Tester.com in your browser.

  • You’ll see a unique, "crazy-looking" email address in a text box with a button below it labeled Then check your score.

  • Don’t click anything here just yet!

2. Open Your Store’s Sign-Up Page

  • In a new browser tab or window, go to your store’s account sign-up page at shop.mystore.com/signup.

3. Fill Out Test Account Details

  • Enter a First Name, Last Name, and Phone Number with any test information you’d like.

4. Copy the Test Email Address from Mail-Tester

  • Go back to the Mail-Tester tab.

  • Click the copy icon next to the unique email address. (See the screenshot below for reference.)

5. Paste the Email Address into Your Sign-Up Form

  • Return to your store’s sign-up page.

  • Paste the copied email address into the Email Address field.

6. Complete the Sign-Up Form

  • Enter a password of your choice, confirm it, and click Register.

7. Check Your Spam Score on Mail-Tester

  • Go back to the Mail-Tester tab and click the Then check your score button.

  • You may see a short animation (like a rowboat) while the tool processes the email. It might take a few moments to complete.

8. Review Your Score

  • Once it’s done, Mail-Tester will display a Spam Score out of 10.

  • A score of 10/10 means your DNS settings are configured correctly, as shown below.

What to Do If Your Score Is Below 10/10

If your score is less than 10/10, don’t worry – we’re here to help!
